Department of Energy Announces $271 Million for Diablo Canyon Power Plant Extended Operations
The award supports California's last commercial nuclear plant, which had been scheduled to close in 2025 before the state authorized extended operations through at least 2030.
The U.S. Department of Energy awarded $271 million to Pacific Gas and Electric to support continued operation of Diablo Canyon Power Plant under the Civil Nuclear Credit Program, established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
The announcement follows a Nuclear Regulatory Commission determination that the plant can continue to operate safely. Diablo Canyon, located near San Luis Obispo on the Central Coast, is California's last remaining commercial nuclear power plant. California had planned to close the facility by 2025, but state legislation passed in 2022 authorized extended operations through at least 2030 as part of an effort to maintain grid reliability during the state's transition to renewable energy.
Rep. Salud Carbajal, whose congressional district includes the Central Coast, released a statement supporting the announcement. Carbajal said the funding is essential for meeting climate goals, protecting grid reliability, and supporting jobs on the Central Coast.
"This $271 million award will help ensure that Diablo Canyon remains a stable part of our power grid as California continues its transition toward renewable energy," Carbajal said.
