Santa Ynez Valley Wineries
The Santa Ynez Valley is one of California's most visited wine regions — a 50-mile stretch of vineyards, tasting rooms, and estate wineries between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the San Rafael Wilderness. The region spans five sub-appellations with distinct climates, from the fog-cooled Sta. Rita Hills to the warm, east-facing Happy Canyon.

Wine Tasting by Area
Solvang — Downtown Tasting Rooms
The most walkable wine tasting district in the valley — more than 20 tasting rooms within a few blocks of Mission Drive. Mix of boutique producers and larger-brand rooms. Strong representation of Sta. Rita Hills, Ballard Canyon, and Happy Canyon wines. Good for visitors who want multiple tastings without driving.
Los Olivos — Grand Avenue Tasting Rooms
A quieter, boutique-focused alternative to Solvang — more than a dozen tasting rooms on and around Grand Avenue in the village. Skews toward smaller producers and estate-grown wines. Stolpman Vineyards, Los Olivos Café, Lucas & Lewellen, and others. Reservations more common than in Solvang.
Los Olivos Estate Wineries — Foxen Canyon Road & Beyond
Estate wineries requiring a short drive from the village. Fess Parker Winery (6200 Foxen Canyon Rd), Stolpman's estate vineyards, and Buttonwood Farm Winery (on Alamo Pintado between Los Olivos and Solvang). Foxen Canyon Road north of Los Olivos passes several additional wineries on the route toward Santa Maria.
Los Olivos Wineries GuideSta. Rita Hills — Buellton, Lompoc & the Western AVA
The coolest sub-appellation in the valley, stretching west from Buellton toward Lompoc along CA-246 and Santa Rosa Road. California's premier cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay region. Sanford Winery (5010 Santa Rosa Rd), Sea Smoke, Melville, Brewer-Clifton, and dozens more. Most require reservations; many are appointment-only. A half-day minimum.
Buellton & Sta. Rita HillsBallard Canyon — Between Solvang & Santa Ynez
A small, warm appellation known for Syrah, Grenache, and Rhône blends. Ballard Canyon Road runs between Solvang and Santa Ynez through the heart of the AVA. Stolpman, Rusack, and Jonata are key producers. Many small wineries require appointment-only visits; check before driving out.
Happy Canyon — Eastern Santa Ynez Valley
A warm, inland appellation east of Santa Ynez on Happy Canyon Road, known for Bordeaux varieties — Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot. Fewer visitors than the western parts of the valley. Producers like Star Lane Vineyard operate here. Most visits are appointment-only.
