September through October is crush season in the Santa Ynez Valley — the moment winemakers spend all year preparing for. Here's what happens, where to be, and how to make the most of harvest in Santa Barbara wine country.

Driving through the Santa Ynez Valley in September means seeing gondolas — large plastic bins stacked roadside waiting for fruit. Winery delivery trucks navigate the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail. The air near crush pads smells of fermenting grape skins.
Early mornings are when picking happens — crews start at dawn to bring in fruit while it's cool. By 8 AM, the first loads are arriving at crush pads. By midday, crush is underway: grapes sorted, stems removed, juice flowing into tanks. If you visit a winery and see the operation in full swing, you're witnessing the entire year's work compressed into a few weeks.
Tasting rooms stay open during harvest. Staff are often more talkative than usual — harvest brings a specific energy. Don't be surprised if the winemaker walks through in muddy boots.

First whites to come in. Sta. Rita Hills and Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay typically harvested first.

Light reds and whites harvested early. Often used for rosé in SYV.

Sta. Rita Hills is the premier Pinot Noir zone — often the last major event of early harvest.
Syrah & Rhône Whites

Grenache, Mourvèdre, Viognier, Roussanne — Rhône varieties are mid-to-late season.
Cabernet Sauvignon & Bordeaux
Mid–late October
The final varieties. Happy Canyon AVA is the source for most SYV Cab Sauv. Harvest can stretch into November in cold years.
The 30-mile trail from Los Olivos north to Santa Maria is the spine of the region's estate wineries. Zaca Mesa, Foxen Winery, Rancho Sisquoc, and Cambria Estate all have working vineyards you can see from the road. During harvest the trail is active with delivery trucks — it's a good place to feel the season.

In fall, several run harvest pickup parties and open pours. Los Olivos wine country is walkable, no reservations needed at most rooms, and most are open 11 AM – 5 PM daily.

During crush, winemakers are stretched thin. Estate wineries that normally accept walk-ins may be heads-down during peak harvest days. A quick call confirms hours and whether the team has time to talk.
Morning is picking and delivery. By 1–2 PM, crush is underway, the winery team has a moment to breathe, and tasting rooms are typically open. Harvest mornings can be chaotic — afternoons are more relaxed.
Fall tasting is often richer — barrel samples, new releases, and harvest wines are higher in alcohol. Los Olivos has great lunch options. Solvang bakeries work as a foundation.
