Morning: Pastries, Windmills & a Museum

Start with a Danish pastry
Solvang's bakeries are the reason people come for breakfast. Olsen's Danish Village Bakery (1529 Mission Dr, open daily) has been baking since 1970 and is the most beloved — arrive early on weekends before the pastry case empties. Birkholm's Bakery & Café (460 Alisal Rd, established 1951) is smaller and quieter. Either way, get the æbleskiver — spherical Danish pancake puffs dusted with powdered sugar and served with jam.
Walk to the windmills
Solvang has four windmills, all within easy walking distance of downtown. The most photogenic is the Dutch-style mill at the corner of Copenhagen Drive and 2nd Street — a quick 5-minute walk from most bakeries. Continue along Copenhagen Drive to see the Mission Drive windmill and the small one near the Elverhøj Museum. None require admission; all are public photo spots.
Hans Christian Andersen Museum (free)
The Hans Christian Andersen Museum (1680 Mission Dr, above the Book Loft) is free and takes about 20–30 minutes. Small but thoughtfully curated, it covers the life of Denmark's most famous storyteller — original illustrations, letters, paper cuttings he made as folk art, and editions of his fairy tales in dozens of languages. Kids and adults both find it genuinely interesting.
Elverhøj Museum of History and Art
If you have extra time, the Elverhøj Museum (1624 Elverhoy Way) documents Solvang's founding story: in 1911, a group of Danish educators from Iowa chose this spot to establish a Danish-American folk school and community. The building itself — designed to evoke a traditional Danish farmhouse — is as interesting as the exhibits. Admission is $5 for adults, children 12 and under free. Open Wednesday–Sunday, 11 AM–5 PM.
Midday: Old Mission Santa Inés
Noon – 1:30 PM
Old Mission Santa Inés (1760 Mission Dr) is one of the best-preserved California missions and a short 10-minute walk or 2-minute drive from the town center. Founded in 1804, it's the 19th of 21 California missions. The museum holds original vestments, Chumash artwork, and mission-era artifacts. The rose garden and cemetery are peaceful spots to linger. Admission is $7 for adults; children under 12 free. Open daily 9 AM–4:30 PM.

Afternoon: Wine Tasting on Copenhagen Drive
2 PM – 5 PM
Copenhagen Drive is Solvang's tasting room strip — a walkable stretch of wineries where most visitors do their wine tasting. Most rooms are walk-in friendly on weekdays and quieter weekend afternoons. Lucas & Lewellen (1645 Copenhagen Dr) is a reliable first stop — large, easy walk-in, and pours both Santa Barbara County estate wines and small-production local labels. Plan 30–45 minutes per tasting room.
For Pinot Noir from the Santa Rita Hills AVA, look for rooms pouring Foxen, Dierberg, or Melville. For Syrah and Rhône-style blends, Qupé and Andrew Murray source from the warmer parts of the valley. The Solvang tasting room scene is less precious than Los Olivos — you can walk in, take your time, and leave without feeling rushed.

Evening: Dinner & the Village at Dusk
5 PM – 8 PM
Solvang empties out late afternoon as day-trippers leave, and the village has a noticeably quieter, more pleasant character from 5 PM onward. This is when the stucco half-timbered buildings catch the golden light and the main streets feel manageable.

A second day opens up the surrounding towns, which are easy half-day drives from Solvang.
Los Olivos wine walk

Chumash Museum in Santa Ynez
The Santa Ynez Chumash Museum and Cultural Center (3500 Numancia St, Santa Ynez — 10 minutes from Solvang) opened in 2024 as the most significant new cultural institution in the valley. Open Thursday–Sunday. Worth 90 minutes.
Solvang Farmers Market
If your second day includes a Wednesday, the Solvang Farmers Market runs 2:30–6:00 PM on Mission Drive in front of the Bethania Lutheran Church. Produce, flowers, and local food vendors.

Wine-Focused Day in Solvang
If wine is your primary reason for visiting, Solvang works well as a base for both in-town tasting rooms and the surrounding Santa Barbara County wine regions.
Morning: Start with a bakery breakfast, then head to Buttonwood Farm & Winery (1500 Alamo Pintado Road) for 11 AM opening — it's a working organic farm 3 miles from downtown, with estate Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah. Reservations recommended on weekends.
Midday: Return to Copenhagen Drive for a tasting at Lucas & Lewellen (1645 Copenhagen Dr, walk-in welcome). Lunch at one of the Mission Drive restaurants — several have by-the-glass pours from local producers.
Afternoon: Drive 15 minutes to Los Olivos for the Grand Avenue wine walk. The village has over a dozen tasting rooms within a 3-block area — you can realistically do 2–3 rooms at a comfortable pace.
