October is peak harvest season in the Santa Ynez Valley. Late-ripening Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Bordeaux varieties come in through the month. The Solvang Festival Theater is still running, crowds have thinned since summer, and the vineyards are turning gold and red. Here's everything happening in October 2026.
October is when Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Grenache, and Petite Sirah come in. Crush pads are running, the air smells of ferment, and winery teams are stretched and happy. The most experiential time to visit wine country.
The Solvang Festival Theater (420 Second Street) runs through mid-October. Fall performances are often the best-attended and most comfortable — warm evenings, no summer fog, outdoor seating under the oaks.
October daytime highs are 72–80°F with cool evenings in the 50s. No summer heat, no winter rain. The best weather window in the valley for walking vineyards, cycling wine trails, and patio dining.
After Labor Day and Danish Days, weekday crowds thin dramatically. Weekday October visits mean no tasting room waits, easy parking downtown Solvang, and winemakers who have time to talk.

October is the most dramatic month of the wine harvest. September's early whites are done; October brings the big reds. Syrah arrives first, typically in the first two weeks. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petite Sirah follow through mid-to-late October. In cool years, some Bordeaux varieties don't come in until early November.
Driving through Happy Canyon (the eastern extreme of the Santa Ynez Valley AVA) and the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail in October means seeing gondolas stacked at the roadside, the lights on at crush pads late into the evening, and vineyards transitioning from green to gold and rust.
The Santa Barbara County Vintners Association (sbcountywines.com) organizes the annual Harvest Festival, typically in mid-October, featuring walk-around tastings of newly crushed and older wines from dozens of member wineries. It's one of the best single-event exposures to the breadth of what the region produces.
The outdoor theater at 420 Second Street in Solvang typically closes mid-October after a summer-long run of Pacific Conservatory Theatre productions. October performances are among the most comfortable of the season — warm evenings, oak canopy overhead, no summer fog. Check pcpa.org for the current production schedule and tickets.
