Getting There from Santa Barbara
Route 1: US-101 North (Faster — 35 miles, ~45 min)
Take US-101 North from Santa Barbara. After about 30 miles, take the Buellton / Solvang exit (CA-246 East). Follow CA-246 East for 4 miles through Buellton into Solvang. Turn right on Mission Drive or Copenhagen Drive for downtown. Free parking in the main lot behind Mission Drive between 1st and 2nd Streets.
Traffic note: US-101 through Goleta can be slow 7–9 AM weekdays. Departing after 9 AM avoids the worst of it.
Route 2: CA-154 San Marcos Pass (Scenic — 33 miles, ~55 min)
From State Street in downtown Santa Barbara, head north on CA-154 (San Marcos Pass Road). The road climbs into the Santa Ynez Mountains, passes Cachuma Lake, and descends into the valley with a panoramic view. Turn left on CA-246 West (or Roblar Ave) toward Solvang. This route is genuinely beautiful — especially in spring and fall — and arrives directly in the wine country without any highway driving.
Best for: first-timers who want the scenic introduction to the valley. Allow extra time for slow traffic on weekends (it's a two-lane mountain road).
Return Route: Do a Loop
Many visitors go up via US-101 and return via CA-154 (or vice versa) for a natural loop. The two routes form a triangle — US-101 is the coastal leg, CA-154 is the inland leg, and CA-246 connects them through Solvang and Buellton. Total loop distance from Santa Barbara: about 90 miles, easily done in a day.

Old Mission Santa Inés
Walk or drive 10 minutes to Old Mission Santa Inés (1760 Mission Dr) — founded 1804, the 19th of California's 21 missions. The rose garden and cemetery are peaceful. The small museum holds Chumash artifacts and original vestments. Admission $7 adults, under 12 free. Open daily 9 AM–4:30 PM. Takes about 45 minutes.

Wine tasting on Copenhagen Drive
Copenhagen Drive is Solvang's tasting room corridor — a walkable strip of wineries where most visitors do their wine tasting. Lucas & Lewellen (1645 Copenhagen Dr) is large, walk-in friendly, and pours both estate wines and local labels. Plan 30–45 minutes per room. Most rooms are open until 5–6 PM.

Evening stroll & dinner (or head home)
The village empties after 5 PM when day-trippers leave — this is when Solvang is most pleasant. The buildings glow in afternoon light and Mission Drive becomes walkable again. Dinner at one of the restaurants, or head home via CA-154 for the scenic mountain sunset drive back to Santa Barbara.
Add Los Olivos (Full Wine Country Day)
If you want a full wine country day, Los Olivos is 15 minutes north of Solvang on Alamo Pintado Road. The tiny village has more than 20 tasting rooms within a 3-block walkable area on Grand Avenue — the most concentrated wine tasting village in California. Add it in the afternoon and return to Solvang for dinner.
Half-Day Version (Short on Time)
