Solvang with Kids

The most-visited family stop near Solvang. Feed ostriches and emus from raised platforms with long-handled bowls. Ostriches reach 7–9 feet tall — the scale genuinely surprises everyone, adults included. Gift shop sells ostrich eggs and feather products. Open daily. Drive 4 miles west on Highway 246 toward Buellton.

Free admission. A small museum above the Book Loft on Mission Drive, dedicated to Denmark's most famous storyteller. Exhibits cover HCA's life, original manuscripts, fairy-tale illustrations, and a recreation of his writing desk. Kids who know The Little Mermaid, Thumbelina, or The Ugly Duckling will have a reference point for everything here.

Solvang's four windmills are scattered through downtown and all are within walking distance. No tickets, no queues — just walk and look. Young children are consistently fascinated by the scale. The Juliane Marie windmill at Alisal Road and Mission Drive is the most photographed. The walk connecting all four is about 0.75 miles of flat sidewalk.

Aebleskiver (round Danish pancake balls, served with jam and powdered sugar) are the defining Solvang food experience. They are universally kid-approved. The Solvang Restaurant and Aebleskiver Café both serve them at breakfast. Danish bakeries along Mission Drive and Copenhagen Drive have kringle, marzipan pastries, and traditional cookies — the window displays alone are entertaining for young children.

Founded in 1804, one of the 21 California missions still in use. The museum has original vestments, paintings, and period artifacts. The mission courtyard and campanario (bell wall) are striking in person. Children under 12 are admitted free. The bell garden walk is appropriate for strollers. Older children with California history coursework will recognize the setting.

The Elverhøj Museum covers the Danish-American community that founded Solvang in 1911. The folk art collection — painted furniture, needlework, ceramics — is genuinely interesting for older kids, especially those with Scandinavian heritage. The museum's adjacent historic Petersen House is a preserved early Solvang home. Children under 12 are typically admitted free.

A larger park east of downtown on Mission Drive, named for the author. Has a play area, picnic tables, open lawn, and creek access. Good for burning energy between attractions. Bathrooms on-site. About 1.5 miles from the windmill — a short drive or a long walk.

An open-air theater behind Mission Drive, running PCPA productions from late June through October. Many productions are family-accessible classics — check pcpa.org for the current season. Outdoor seating, blankets and snacks are appropriate, and the setting under the oaks at sunset is genuinely memorable. Appropriate for older children and teenagers.
