Aebleskiver Breakfast

Start at Solvang Restaurant (1672 Copenhagen Dr) or the Aebleskiver Café. Round Danish pancake balls with powdered sugar and jam — the defining Solvang food experience. Also try a windmill cookie or a piece of kringle from the bakery next door.

Windmill Walk + HCA Museum

Walk to the Juliane Marie windmill (Alisal Rd & Mission Dr) for photos. Continue to the Hans Christian Andersen Museum (1680 Mission Dr, above Book Loft). Free admission; takes about 20–30 minutes. Exhibits cover the author's life, fairy tale illustrations, and a recreation of his writing desk.

Ostrichland USA

Drive 4 miles west on Highway 246 toward Buellton. Ostrichland USA is a working ostrich and emu farm where visitors feed birds from raised platforms. Budget 45 minutes — ostriches standing 7-9 feet tall tend to stop people in their tracks. Gift shop has ostrich eggs and products.

Old Mission Santa Inés

Return toward downtown and visit the Mission at 1760 Mission Drive (10 min walk from the windmill). Founded 1804, $4 adults, free under 12. The museum has original vestments and period artifacts. The campanario and garden courtyard are worth 15 minutes even without museum entry.

Lunch + Downtown Exploration

Lunch on Mission Drive. Mad & Vin at The Landsby for California coastal or Paula's Pancake House for something lighter. Afternoon: walk Copenhagen Drive tasting rooms — Lucas & Lewellen (1645 Copenhagen Dr) is walk-in no reservation needed, Sevtap Winery (473 Atterdag Rd) is a smaller boutique room.

Elverhøj Museum

The Elverhøj Museum of History and Art (1624 Elverhøj Way, $5) covers the Danish-American community that founded Solvang in 1911. The folk art collection and preserved Petersen House are the highlights. About 45 minutes.

Check In + Rest

Check into your hotel. Early evening in Solvang is pleasant for a walk — the town is calmer once the day-trippers leave and the windmills are lit.

Dinner

For a special dinner: The Hitching Post II in Buellton (5 miles west, 420 E Hwy 246) — Santa Maria-style oak-smoked BBQ with the restaurant's own estate Pinot Noir, the landmark Sideways restaurant. Book ahead. Closer option: Root 246 at Hotel Corque (420 Alisal Rd, Solvang) — the upscale local choice.

Late Breakfast in Solvang

Sunday mornings in Solvang are surprisingly quiet. Good time to try a different bakery from yesterday — Mortensen's Danish Bakery (1588 Mission Dr) or the Birkholm's counter at the back of the Solvang Restaurant. Take your time.

Los Olivos Wine Tasting

Drive 5 miles north on Alamo Pintado Road to Los Olivos. Grand Avenue has 12+ tasting rooms open from 11 AM, most walk-in welcome. Firestone Walker doesn't have a room here but several smaller producers do. Spend 2–3 hours across two or three rooms. Most rooms are between $20–30 per person for a flight.

Lunch in Los Olivos

Los Olivos has solid lunch options right on Grand Avenue — Sides Hardware & Shoes and the Los Olivos Wine Merchant Café are the staples. Good food and local wine by the glass while you decompress from the morning.

Foxen Canyon Wine Trail (Optional)

For wine-focused visitors: drive north on Foxen Canyon Road toward Zaca Mesa and Foxen Winery. This is the estate winery spine of the county — actual vineyards on rolling hills, active operations during harvest season. A 30-minute drive covers 6–8 estate wineries. Most require reservations or are appointment-only; call ahead or just drive to see the landscape.

Return to Solvang

Return via Alamo Pintado Road. If you didn't get to Copenhagen Drive tasting rooms yesterday, this is a second chance. Afternoon light hits the mission-style facades best from the east side of the street.

Depart or One More Tasting

If driving to LA or Santa Barbara, 5 PM gives you a comfortable return with traffic settling. If staying another night, Buttonwood Farm Winery (1500 Alamo Pintado Rd) has late afternoon appointments — an estate garden tasting that's one of the quieter wine experiences in the valley.
