Camping Near Solvang & the Santa Ynez Valley

The go-to campground for Santa Ynez Valley visitors. Lake Cachuma is a Santa Barbara County reservoir and recreation area on scenic Highway 154 — the same route that passes the Cold Spring Tavern and over the San Marcos Pass. The campground is large but well-managed, with sites ranging from basic tent-only spots to full-hookup RV pads and two-room cabins with kitchenettes. The lake itself is popular for fishing (bass, catfish, trout in season), kayaking, and paddleboarding. From November through February, bald eagles winter on the lake — the county runs ranger-led eagle spotting cruises on winter weekends, one of the few places in Southern California to see them reliably.

The closest camping option to downtown Solvang, and the most amenity-rich. Flying Flags is a full resort campground right in Buellton — 5 miles from Solvang on Highway 246. It's designed for RVers but also has tent sites and glamping structures. The pool and hot tub are the draws for families. Buellton's restaurant row (Industrial Eats, the original Pea Soup Andersen's, Industrial Eats, and a growing collection of wine country casual spots) is walking distance. The tradeoff: it's commercial camping without the natural setting of Cachuma or Gaviota.

A state park campground at the edge of the Santa Ynez Mountains where they meet the Pacific. Gaviota is more remote-feeling than Lake Cachuma — 39 sites spread through coastal oak woodland, with the ocean a short walk through an old Southern Pacific Railroad tunnel. The campground has restrooms with showers but no electrical hookups. The Gaviota Peak Trail starts nearby, a serious 6-mile round trip with 2,400 feet of climbing to summit views of the Channel Islands. Hot Springs Canyon offers an easier alternative. Gaviota is the right choice if you want to feel farther from civilization while still being 25 miles from Solvang.

For experienced campers who want solitude, Los Padres National Forest north of Los Olivos offers primitive and dispersed camping among oaks, chaparral, and pine. The Figueroa Campground (near the summit of Figueroa Mountain) is a designated campground accessible by a long paved-then-dirt road and requires an Adventure Pass for parking. Dispersed camping elsewhere in the forest requires a fire permit (free from the ranger station) but no site fees. This is dry, remote California back-country camping — bring everything you need, including water. Peak season for the area is March–April wildflower season; otherwise it's very quiet.

The best beach camping option within range of Solvang. El Capitan State Beach has bluff-top and creekside sites directly above a rocky cove with one of the best kelp forest snorkeling spots on the Central Coast. The campground is reliably popular and books out weeks (sometimes months) ahead on summer weekends — check availability well in advance. A flat bike path connects to Refugio State Beach 2.5 miles up the coast. El Capitan is primarily a beach camping destination; Solvang makes a good day trip from here rather than the reverse.
