Barstow, CA
First major rest stop on I-15. Gas, food, outlet mall. Good place to break the drive.
Cajon Pass
The descent into the San Bernardino Valley. Scenic mountain stretch, 4,190-foot summit.
Los Angeles area
Connect to I-5 North or I-405 North. Add 30–90 min for traffic depending on time of day. No avoiding it.
Ventura
US-101 corridor. Optional quick harbor stop. Smooth sailing from here to Solvang.
Santa Barbara
Optional State Street lunch stop or coffee. 40 miles from Solvang via US-101.
Buellton exit (Hwy 246)
Turn right off US-101. Solvang is 5 miles east on Highway 246.

Free parking throughout downtown. Most hotels have on-site parking.
LA Traffic Strategy
There's no way around LA on this route. Best times to hit the city: before 7 am or after 9 am on weekdays; before 8 am on weekends. Friday afternoon (4–8 pm) is the worst window — avoid. If you're starting from Las Vegas on a Friday, leave after 8 pm (late dinner in Vegas, arrive LA late) or very early Saturday morning. Waze is essential through the 405/5 interchange.
Las Vegas to Solvang Weekend
Friday
- —Leave Las Vegas by 8 pm — traffic through LA after 10 pm is manageable.
- —Drive I-15 to I-5. Stop in Barstow for gas.
- —Spend the night in LA if the drive is too long — plenty of hotels near I-5.
- —Or push through: 4.5 hours to Solvang puts you there by midnight. Hotels are fine with late check-ins.
Saturday
- —Bakery breakfast on Mission Drive — aebleskiver at Olsen's or Mortensen's.
- —Self-guided walking tour: windmills, Little Mermaid statue, Hans Christian Andersen Museum.
- —Morning wine tasting: 2–3 tasting rooms on Mission Drive.
- —Lunch, then drive 10 minutes north to Los Olivos for Grand Avenue tasting rooms.
- —Optional: Foxen Canyon drive north of Los Olivos.
