The Route
San Diego
Leave by 7–8 am to beat LA traffic.
Los Angeles (I-405 or I-5)
The most variable stretch. Add 30–90 min depending on time of day. Avoid 7–10 am and 3–7 pm.
Ventura
Optional stop — harbor, good coffee, quick beach break. 30 minutes off the drive.
Santa Barbara
State Street lunch stop if timing works. 40 minutes from Solvang via US-101 or the scenic Hwy 154 over the San Marcos Pass.
Buellton (US-101 exit)
Turn right on Hwy 246. Solvang is 5 miles east. Ostrichland is on this road — a good stop if arriving with energy to spare.
Solvang
Downtown parking is free and plentiful except Danish Days weekend.
LA Traffic Warning
The I-5 corridor through Los Angeles is the main variable. Leave San Diego before 7 am or after 9 am to avoid the worst of it. On a holiday weekend, add 60–90 minutes. The 405 interchange (mile 135) and Cahuenga Pass (mile 145) are the consistent bottlenecks. Waze or Google Maps live traffic is essential — route options exist but none reliably beats I-5 on a typical day.
