Bakersfield to Solvang FAQ

How far is Solvang from Bakersfield?
Solvang is about 135 miles from downtown Bakersfield via the scenic Cuyama Valley route (CA-33 South to CA-166 West to US-101 North) — approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. The alternate coastal highway route via I-5 South and US-101 North is longer at about 165–175 miles but uses larger freeway roads the whole way. What is the best route from Bakersfield to Solvang?
The most direct route is via CA-33 South from Bakersfield through Taft, then CA-166 West through the Cuyama Valley, connecting to US-101 North at Gaviota, then Highway 246 East into Solvang. This takes about 2–2.5 hours and passes through beautiful Central California back-country — oil fields near Taft, the remote Cuyama Valley, and the Santa Ynez Mountains. The alternate I-5 South + US-101 North route is entirely on major freeways but is 30–40 miles longer.
Is Solvang a good day trip from Bakersfield?
Yes — the drive is short enough that Solvang makes a genuine day trip from Bakersfield. Leave by 8 AM to arrive in Solvang by 10–10:30 AM. You'll have 5–6 hours for bakeries, wine tasting, shopping, and lunch before heading back in the late afternoon. An overnight stay extends the experience significantly and lets you add Los Olivos wine tasting on the second day.
Is there anything to see on the drive from Bakersfield to Solvang?
The Cuyama Valley route (CA-33 South to CA-166 West) passes through some of California's most remote and scenic interior country — the Midway-Sunset Oil Field near Taft (one of the largest in the US), the wide Cuyama Valley floor with the Sierra Madre Mountains to the south, and the winding Santa Ynez Mountains descent to the coast at Gaviota. It's genuinely interesting driving if you're not pressed for time.
